Information, recruitment and representation are three different things
Many people lose money because they mix these up. Before you share documents or pay anyone, ask which of these three roles the person actually holds.
| Role | What they can do | What they cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| General information service (like this website) | Explain programs, requirements and official steps; help you organise documents; point you to official IRCC and Job Bank pages. | Represent you before IRCC, give paid immigration advice as a licensed professional, issue job offers or influence a visa decision. |
| Canadian employer or recruiter | Advertise real jobs, interview candidates and, where required, apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and issue a job offer. | Approve your visa. Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, employers must not charge workers recruitment fees or recover them from wages. |
| Authorized representative | Give paid immigration advice and represent you with IRCC. In Canada this means a licensed consultant of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC), a lawyer or paralegal of a Canadian law society, or a Québec notary. | Guarantee an approval. Only IRCC officers make decisions. |
Tip: You never need a paid representative to apply. IRCC forms and guides are free on Canada.ca. If you do hire someone who charges a fee, check their licence on the CICC public register or with the provincial law society first.
How a Canada work permit usually works
Most foreign workers need a work permit before they can work in Canada. There are two broad types.
Employer-specific
Lists your employer, job and location. Many — but not all — require the employer to get a positive LMIA first.
Open work permit
Lets you work for most employers, but only specific groups qualify, such as certain spouses and graduates.
For eligibility details, documents and fees, read our full guide to Canada work permit requirements for 2027. Current government fees are always listed on the official IRCC fee list.
Get a genuine job offer
From a real Canadian employer you can independently verify.
Employer completes its part
An LMIA from ESDC, or an LMIA-exempt offer submitted through the IRCC Employer Portal.
You apply to IRCC
Usually online through your IRCC account, with forms, documents and fees.
Biometrics & review
Give fingerprints and photo if requested; an officer reviews your file.
Decision
Approval, a request for more information, or a refusal with reasons.

How to find and check Canada jobs safely
Food processing, warehousing, trucking, construction and caregiving roles attract a lot of interest from overseas applicants — and a lot of fake offers. A careful search looks like this:
- Search official boards first. Start with Job Bank, the Government of Canada’s job site, and employers’ own careers pages.
- Verify the employer. Check the company’s official website, address and phone number yourself — not the details inside the offer letter.
- Confirm the LMIA story. Ask for the LMIA number and job details; a real employer will not ask you to pay for them.
- Apply in your own name. Keep copies of every message and never hand over your IRCC account password.
Step-by-step instructions are in our guide on how to verify a Canada job offer and LMIA, and current openings that mention sponsorship are discussed in LMIA jobs Canada 2027.
Documents most applicants prepare
Tap each item you already have. Exact requirements depend on your country, the permit type and IRCC’s document checklist for your application, so always confirm in your IRCC account.
Common mistakes that cost applicants time and money
Applying for the wrong permit
Choosing a visitor visa to look for work, or an open work permit you are not eligible for, leads to refusals.
Weak or inconsistent documents
Dates, job titles and names that don’t match across forms and letters raise doubts for the officer.
Using unofficial websites
Copycat sites charge extra “processing” fees. Pay government fees only on Canada.ca or your IRCC account.
Ignoring a past refusal
Reapplying without fixing the officer’s concerns usually gets the same answer. See Canada visa refusal reasons.
Sharing your IRCC login
Your account holds your personal data and application. Keep the password to yourself.
Leaving it too late
Police certificates, translations and employer documents can take weeks. Start early.
Fraud red flags you should never ignore
If you see any of these, stop and verify through official sources before you pay or send documents.
“Guaranteed visa” or “guaranteed job”
Nobody outside IRCC can guarantee a visa, and no honest recruiter guarantees a job before an employer decides.
A “Canada visa lottery” or “free visa”
Canada does not run a visa lottery. Read the facts about the visa lottery myth.
Paying for a job offer or LMIA
Employers using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program must not charge workers recruitment fees.
Pressure, secrecy and urgency
“Pay today or lose the seat”, personal email addresses and payment to private accounts are classic warning signs.

Frequently asked questions
What does Sardar Jagmohan Singh Consultant do?
It provides independent, general information about Canada work permits, visitor and study visas, job searches and fraud prevention, plus guidance on organising documents. It does not represent applicants before IRCC or make visa decisions.
Is Sardar Jagmohan Singh a licensed immigration consultant (RCIC)?
No. Sardar Jagmohan Singh is not an RCIC, lawyer or government representative. If you want paid advice or representation, choose an authorized representative and check their licence on the CICC register or with a Canadian law society.
Can you guarantee me a Canada visa or job?
No — and you should be cautious of anyone who does. IRCC officers decide every visa and permit application, and employers decide who they hire.
Do I need an LMIA to work in Canada?
Many employer-specific work permits require the employer to get a positive LMIA, but some jobs are LMIA-exempt, and open work permits do not need one. The employer, not the worker, applies for the LMIA.
Should I pay someone for a Canadian job offer?
No. Employers hiring through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program must not charge workers recruitment fees. Requests to pay for a job offer or LMIA are a common sign of fraud.
