How Much Bank Balance Is Required for a Canada Visitor Visa from India?
There is no fixed minimum. IRCC officers check whether your money is enough for your planned trip and whether it clearly comes from your own savings, income or a confirmed sponsor. This guide shows how to work out a realistic amount and how to prove it.
IRCC does not publish a minimum bank balance for visitor visas. Officers are instructed to check that you can cover the “reasonable expenses” of your stay, considering how long you will stay, who is paying, and where the money comes from. IRCC recommends showing at least 6 months of bank statements. A steady balance that fits your budget and income is more convincing than a large, sudden deposit.
Is there a fixed bank balance for a Canada tourist visa?
No. Unlike a study permit, the visitor visa has no published proof-of-funds table. IRCC’s instructions to officers say a visitor needs enough money for all reasonable expenses during the stay, and officers assess this case by case.
So any figure you see online, such as “you need 10 lakh rupees”, is somebody’s opinion, not an IRCC rule. What matters is whether your funds make sense for your trip.
What do visa officers look at in your finances?
Length of stay
Funds must cover all reasonable expenses for the whole stay.
Host support
Support from family or friends counts if it can be confirmed and has been arranged.
Source of funds
Officers consider savings, employment and the host’s income.
How to estimate the amount for your trip
Add up your real costs. Enter amounts in Indian rupees for your own trip. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere; the calculator only adds your numbers.
Estimated trip cost: ₹0
This is your own planning estimate, not an IRCC requirement. Show funds that comfortably cover it, and keep a buffer for emergencies.
Which financial documents should you submit?
| Document | Tip |
|---|---|
| Bank statements | IRCC recommends at least 6 months of account details. Use statements stamped or downloaded from your bank. |
| Employment letter | IRCC suggests one dated no earlier than 3 months before you apply, showing your role, start date and salary. |
| Salary slips or business records | Show that the balance comes from regular income. |
| Income tax returns (ITR) | Not on IRCC's general list, but many Indian applicants include them to show income over time. |
| Fixed deposits, property or investments | Optional supporting evidence of ties and savings. |
| Host's financial documents | Only if your host is paying, for example their employment letter or Notice of Assessment. |
What if your host in Canada is paying?
IRCC's instructions allow support from family or friends to count when it can be confirmed and has actually been arranged. In practice, your host should say so clearly in an invitation letter and add proof of their income. You should still show some funds of your own and your ties to India.
