- Job Bank (jobbank.gc.ca) is the Government of Canada’s job site. Search for “food packer” or “labourer – food and beverage processing”. Then, where available, use the filter for jobs open to candidates outside Canada. Our Job Bank guide explains the filters.
- The employer’s own careers page is another safe source. Type the company’s website address yourself. In other words, do not click a link in a message. Then look for “Careers” or “Jobs”.
- Large job boards such as Indeed or LinkedIn also list food production jobs. However, fake listings appear there too. So, confirm every vacancy on the employer’s own website before you apply.
What food packing jobs in Canada involve
In Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC 2021), food packing roles fall under unit group 95106, Labourers in food and beverage processing (TEER 5). For example, the official list includes frozen food packer, bakery products packager and meat packer.
Typical duties include packing goods into bags, boxes or other containers. Workers also remove filled containers from conveyors and check products for basic quality defects. In addition, they handle and clean up materials. Our NOC 95106 guide explains the code in more detail.
How hiring from outside Canada usually works
- First, a Canadian employer advertises the job. If the position requires it, the employer applies to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Some jobs are exempt from this step.
- Next, if ESDC issues a positive LMIA, the employer can give you a job offer. The employer can also share a copy of the LMIA decision for your application.
- Finally, you apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for a work permit. You pay the government fees through IRCC’s official channels.
Who pays the LMIA fee? For low-wage positions, ESDC says the employer pays $1,000 per position. ESDC also says this fee “can’t be paid by nor be recovered from temporary foreign workers.”
Similarly, employers must make sure that they, and anyone recruiting for them, do not charge workers recruitment fees. You can read these rules in the ESDC program requirements. How to check a food packing job offer
- Find the vacancy on Job Bank or on the employer’s careers page.
- Check that the company appears in an official Canadian business registry.
- Make sure its website, address and email domain match the offer.
- Contact the employer using the details on its official website, not the details in the message.
- Never pay for a job, an LMIA, a “file charge” or a “visa guarantee”.
Warning signs of a fake offer
- Someone asks you to pay the employer, an agent or an “HR manager” for the job.
- The contact uses only WhatsApp or a free email address, such as Gmail or Yahoo.
- There is no interview, or the salary is unusually high.
- You are told to pay today or lose the job.
- Someone promises a guaranteed visa, a “free visa” or a fast approval.
