Who can sponsor a spouse from Pakistan

A spouse visa for Canada is really a permanent residence application under the family class. Your partner in Canada is the sponsor, and you are the principal applicant. If approved, you become a permanent resident, not a visitor.

🇨🇦

The sponsor

Must be at least 18 and a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident living in Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Indian Act. A Canadian citizen living abroad must show they will live in Canada once you become a PR.

💍

The relationship

You can be sponsored as a spouse (legally married), a common-law partner (lived together for at least 12 months) or a conjugal partner in limited cases.

🤝

The undertaking

The sponsor signs a promise to support you financially for 3 years from the day you become a permanent resident.

Spousal sponsorship usually has no minimum income requirement, unless the sponsor is also sponsoring a dependent child who has children of their own. A sponsor who is on social assistance (other than for a disability) or who defaulted on an earlier undertaking may not be able to sponsor.

PKR amounts use a mid-market rate of about 1 CAD = PKR 198 (late October 2026), rounded. IRCC charges in Canadian dollars, so the rupee amount on your card statement depends on your bank's rate on the day you pay, and banks often add a margin of several percent. Medical exam, police certificate, translation and VFS charges are extra. See the full Canada visa fee in Pakistani rupees guide.

Documents commonly needed from Pakistan

IRCC gives each applicant a personalised document checklist inside the online application. Pakistani applicants commonly prepare:

  • Valid passports for you and any children
  • Nikah Nama (with English translation)
  • NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC)
  • NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC)
  • CNIC copies for both partners
  • Wedding photos and photos together over time
  • Proof of communication (calls, chats, visits)
  • Police certificate from Pakistan
  • Sponsor's proof of Canadian status
  • Immigration medical exam, when requested
  • Birth certificates for children
  • Divorce or death certificate from any earlier marriage
Genuine relationship test: IRCC can refuse a marriage it believes was entered mainly for immigration. Honest, consistent evidence matters more than the number of photos. Never submit fake documents; it can lead to a 5-year ban.
